It's not so easy to take your team from the National League South to win the Premier League as it was in the past, which is probably a good and realistic thing. The level of difficulty is probably a bit higher than previous versions of this game I've played many years ago. There must be hundreds of ways that players score goals in the game. Overall though, the match engine is not too bad with plenty of variability. I've also noticed that there is an extremely high number of goals being disallowed for offside, some of which visually could not have been. Defenders are also prone to standing in the middle of the field without challenging someone running towards goal from the wing, often standing watching as they have a clear run on goal. For example, defenders inside the penalty box will kick the ball out for a corner with no one within 20 yards of them. The match engine, which I'm sure is very challenging to program, has its flaws. You can delegate many aspects of these things to your director of football, assistants and coaches to reduce the level of complexity should you wish. The game has quite a lot of detail with training, tactics and scouting/recruitment. The only reason I bought it from Amazon in this way is that it was cheaper (at the time) that buying the online version. If you buy this physical version of the game, it comes with a Steam activation code. Two hours can pass by before you've even noticed. I decided to buy Football Manager for the first time in a long time to kill some time on trains and planes, and it does that as well as ever.
I'm probably far too old for games like this having bought the first Championship Manager back in the 1990s.
